The 2015 MCA symposium is on ‘Alcohol; health, wellbeing and work’.  Alcohol is the world’s number one risk factor for ill-health and premature death in the 25-59 year old age group, that is amongst those of working age. An estimated 17.3 million working days are lost annually due to alcohol in the UK, costing employers £1.8 billion and costing the economy £7.3 billion. Alcohol-related harm costs a typical organisation of around 200 employees around £37,664 per annum. Problematic alcohol use can be both a cause of and a result of unemployment. In this symposium we will cover approaches to addressing this issue, including workplace policies, the latest methods for testing and monitoring alcohol use, and the successful support of individual workers with problematic alcohol use.
